STATEMENT FROM ALLEN MASHBURN, CANDIDATE FOR LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR OF NORTH CAROLINA REGARDING SB 678

On Tuesday, the General Assembly voted to override Governor Cooper’s veto of Senate Bill 678 which made correction to House Bill 951, which the Governor signed into law in 2021. The correction replaces the phrase “renewable energy” in the statute to the broader “clean energy.”

I was against the passage of House Bill 951 as it wreaks of the “Green New Deal” agenda that is plaguing our Country, increasing costs for North Carolinians and bringing unneeded regulations which only grows the footprint of government. While I am still against the green agenda, I applaud the NCGA for overriding the veto of the governor of SB 678, which will now include the most underused and overlooked energy resource we have— nuclear energy and nuclear fusion power.

“As future Chair of the North Carolina Energy Policy Council, we will explore and recommend an expansion of nuclear energy to the legislature, that is clean in regard to our environment and affordable to our citizens. A plan can come about that makes us good stewards of what God has given us and yet doesn’t destroy our economy in the process like the green policies pushed by the Left. North Carolina has four nuclear power plants that serve our state and this is a first step of utilizing the tools we have already in place,” Mashburn is quoted as saying.
